A Great Find - Sandhill Cranes Willcox, Arizona (Video)

When I check our route for the next stop, I have a pretty good idea of where we are headed. On Google Maps, you can check distances by running the mouse along the chosen route to see the miles covered. Our maximum is 250 miles a day. This led us to Willcox. First, I checked iOverlander, FreeCampsites.net, and Passport America.  Then it's off to look for things to do there, usually in the afternoon or early evening.

Willcox offers a grand surprise of being the home to the sandhill crane winter migration.  It is truly an unbelievable sight.  We were quite shocked when we came upon it.  Locals know it as "the pond" out by the old golf course.    You do have to pass through the golf course to get to the water.

More than 20,000 sandhill cranes flock to the ancient closed-bed lake to spend the winter.  We were lucky enough to boondock alongside the water to see both the evening return and sunrise take off for feeding in the nearby fields.

Each year there is a birding event.  On January 16th, "Wings Over Willcox" will offer field trips, food and educational classes on birding, wildlife and hiking.

It was a somewhat quiet night occasionally disturbed by the cranes movements whiched caused them to move about and talk to each other.
