Coming back from our Arizona trip Arizona for a month with our travel trailer, we had planned on crossing at Anzalduas back into Mexico. We were refused crossing by the U.S. side. Apparently, Anzalduas is not issuing TIP for Rvs at Anzalduas. We went to the McAllen/Hidalgo Bridge. We went through the inspection in two minutes (Mexican plates).
We couldn't take the rv through the old centro so we took the street 20 de Noviembre. It is one way heading south. I drove in the middle as there was a lot of debris and trash on the sides. I noticed a car behind me flashing its lights so I pulled over to drive on the right. The car sped up, honking and flashing its lights. It pulled in front of me and slammed on its brakes at an angle. It was a red shiny new Chevrolet Aveo with blacked out windows and no plates or paper tags. They motioned for us to pull over so I hit the gas barely scraping by them. They chased us down in hot pursuit for over a mile as I drove 45 mph or more. I had to dodge and block them several times. I ran a red light as well as a four-way stop almost slamming into a long box delivery truck. I got to a major intersection honking and flashing my lights. They gave up. I don't know if they had guns or not.
Our travel trailer is now up for sale. 40 years living in Mexico, and 24 years rving in Mexico. That's why we decided to rv this last month in the U.S. Being caught in a shoot-out and chase between military and cartel three years ago and now this, I'm done.
I have to apologize to everyone who ever listened to me or read my rving blog about how safe Mexico was. The last ten years have changed the game completely. Don't put your loved ones at risk. Why they wanted to stop two old people in a 2005 SUV and a 2008 travel trailer I'll never know. I won't tolerate this bullsh-- anymore. Sheinbaum had better get on the ball. Mexicans, foreigners and tourists alike are fed up. Send emails to your consulates, Mexican and American senators and representatives. We can no longer live like this and it doesn't matter about the past, it's about what is happening now and how the "now" are going to fix it.
Oh brother. So sad to hear this. Doug still wants to take our little trailer to MX. I'm not so sure. I want to go but I'm starting to think flying is our better option. I told him we were going to check with you closer to the time (very end of December departure from BC) to decide what to do. It makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteWow, quick thinking on your part and glad you made in out safe and sound. Vern
ReplyDeleteSheinbaum? Sounds real Mexican.
ReplyDeleteDo you honestly think she has Mexico's interests FIRST? Probably installed there to facilitate the NGOs down in the Darian Gap human traffiking, sex trade, etc. NGOs=Catholic Charities, Lutheran Family, Israel's HIAS and many, many more. Where do you think they all get their funding? We are paying to be invaded!!!!! The cartel's don't care. They do not value life, even their own.
I am so sorry this happened to you and Juan. You must have been very scared. I would have been and it would have taken me quite some time to recover. I have followed a few bloggers over the years who have spent lots of time in Mexico but the concern over safety has always given me pause. I hope that the two of you recover from this quickly.
ReplyDeleteYep, the risk is there, that's for sure. We've never had a problem while driving many, many, miles in Mexico, however we were mugged once in Zacatecas. We're going to keep going. Maybe one day we will have a problem... maybe not...
ReplyDeleteThe Unabomber was caught because his brother turned him in. Until family members start turning in criminals this won't change.
ReplyDeleteSo upsetting to read this! First of all, you got out of it without being injured or robbed. That is the important thing. The borders have always been a dangerous area and that applies to many countries. My advice has always been to cross as early in the day as you can, as near to opening as you can and with a full tank of gas. Don't stop after clearing Customs, get onto a cuota ASAP, head south and don't stop for at least 200 KM. After that, the same rules apply as for any travellers. Again Chris and Juan, I am so sorry this happened to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Croft we appreciate your comment. It wasn't easy and yes, your advice is always well taken. We always follow the rules you listed but I guess out time was up. Peace.
DeleteChris, If Beach and I ever were put in that situation, I would pray that you were behind the wheel of the vehicle towing the RV. With all that adrenaline rush, you still managed to control the vehicle and RV and do the things that scared them off. particularly, turning on all the emergency lights and laying down on that horn in the middle of an intersection. If anyone ever teases you again about how fast you drive, I will cut them off at the knees. Within the next five years, the border will be changing for the worse. The threats are out there to shut the border completely down. Unless the current New Mexican government and the new Trump government can bury the hatchet, it will get worst. Right now, the Mexican government wants high tech equipment and trainers lodged in Mexico to train Mexican solders from the US, but no active duty US soldiers posted in cartel regions. The last time I looked at the defense budget about two years ago, it was $1,3 Trillion (yes, TRILLION). The only ones which can match that amount to fight off the cartels are the cartels themselves, not the Mexican government.
ReplyDeleteThis is Dee.
DeleteSo sorry this happened to you gents. Sometimes I think we should head there again but then this. Plus we don't have an RV now! Alas. Steve & Robin
ReplyDeleteSounds familiar ....Take away firearms from the law abiding, then only the crooks will have them. If they are caught nothing will happen. A law abiding, locked up or /and fined....Sheesh, sad. Glad you folks are O.K.!..Take Care!
